Fry's research shows how important sight word mastery is! The first 100 Fry words are found in 50% of our printed language. If your students know the first 100 words, then in theory, that means that they already know about 50% of the words they will read in school! Wow, that is some powerful info!
The first 100 Fry words are recommended to be memorized by the end of first grade. Unlike Dolch words, Fry words are any part of speech and based purely on the most commonly found words in published writing. Fry's research is also much more recent than Dolch's research. The debate between these two lists will be saved for another post. :)
Many of these HFW (High Frequency Words) words don't follow our phonics rules, so they need to be memorized (sight words). For example, look at the HFW "have". It does not follow the rules of the "-ave" word family (gave, pave, Dave). If a student tried to sound it out, they would see the vowel-consanant-e (silent e, sneaky e, etc) and make the 'a' long, which would be incorrect.. It simply must be instantly recognized, rather than being sounded out. Another example is the word "what". Word family = "at" (cat, that, mat). BUT it does not follow those phonics rules because the vowel 'a' is a schwa (it makes the "uh" sound). I call those "lazy vowels" in my class. :)
With all that being said, here are some resources you are welcome to use in your classroom! They are made for first grade, but can be used for kindergartners and second graders.

This set is an easy, low-prep option for a word work station! It contains the same activities for each lesson, just updated each week with the new word, so the kids can quickly pick up how they're done. You can choose which activities to use each day, or let students choose once they know how all the activities work. These also make great morning work since the students learn the directions pretty quickly and can easily get started independently.
The assessments are awesome and make it SO easy to keep track of sight word mastery! Here are just a few examples of what's included in this set:

Want to try out the first week's lesson and see if you and your students like it? You can snag a freebie just for that here!!
Students can choose to look over it before they are timed (Why not? More practice!) if they'd like. Sometimes struggling readers get frustrated knowing that they are timed. I tell these parents not to time them- just to make sure to go over the words together and they can just initial in the blanks each night instead of writing a time. This is great home practice for HFW memorization, and kids can make it fun by trying to beat their previous times!
This word wall set is great for any classroom! These words are used so commonly that it makes sense to have these up for easy reference for the kiddos. You can choose to print these on white as shown, or on any color that you'd like. I put the words up as we learn them each week. These fit well in pocket charts if you like to display the current week's words!
If you're interested in using all three of these resources, I have them available in a BUNDLE to save you some moolah!
Just click any picture to see these in my TpT store. Happy teaching! :)

Fry First 100 Homework Pages
These homework pages are a perfect accompaniment to my Fry First 100 Word Work Activity Pack listed above! This homework is quick and easy for students to complete with their parents each night- or with anyone old enough to time them & make sure they're reading the words correctly. I don't like the idea of my 1st graders spending a good chunk of family time each night doing homework. These pages only take a minute or two to complete, so I love using them! Here's what they look like (each week has different words):
