What the Font?!

How to create your own fonts! For beginners. Like, beginner beginners. Just go with it.

I am easily inspired to try new things. I see awesome stuff and think to myself, "I wish I could make that!", or, "I wish I could do that!"

I have long admired cute fonts. I currently have over 700 on my classroom & home computers.

Recently I finally got the final push to start delving in to how to make fonts. After some googling, I found a free website to help make fonts - https://www.calligraphr.com/en/ .

I quickly discovered why it's free. You can only create 75 characters.
You really need at least 79 characters for a very basic font. Think 26 letters x2 (uppercase & lowercase)- that's already 52 characters. Add in the numbers 0-9- now we're up to 62 characters. with standard punctuation and symbols added in, you will be over the allowed 75 characters. Who wants to spend lots of time creating a new font that is extremely limited?

Of course, you can pay to use more characters. I started out with the free version just for fun.

Navigating the website was a tad complicated (and I consider myself decently "tech-y"). I used the only decent pen at my disposal at home: a sharpie pen. All my good felt pens are in my classroom, duh!

After you select which characters you will create, it generates a printable template. You print & draw in your characters in the corresponding boxes. The problem with this is that you only get one shot! If you are unhappy with the way one letter turned out, you have to print out a whole new page to draw another one.

Here's one of the pages I used:

I had marked out the ones I didn't like, so I knew which ones to redo afterward.

Once you finish writing your characters, you scan & save them to your computer. Then you can upload them to the website & it automatically shows you what your font will look like. You can adjust the height & spacing, and that's about it when you use the free version.

Once you're happy with your font, you can save it to your computer and install it! I was totally nerding out when my first font was finished. It was not great, not even good, but it was my handwriting!  Cue nerdy self high five!

And because I am so totally humble, I named it after myself & my blog.

FGF Ryder

Then I experimented with my letters a bit more and made two more fonts-

FGF Firstie First & FGF Teachie Teach.

Eventually I went back to my original font and updated some of the characters. I added these fonts to my TPT store as free downloads for personal use. This is not the easiest way to make a font, but it was free, and I was willing to try it out for fun.

Until next time.

XOXO,

Ali
